Stump Grinding – A Fast, Convenient and Inexpensive Way to Get Rid of Unwanted Stumps

Stumps are unsightly, take up valuable yard space and can be a tripping hazard. In addition, a tree stump’s roots continue to grow and can eventually choke out any new grass or plants trying to take root in the surrounding soil. If you’ve tried to remove a stump using a shovel or saw, you know that it is an incredibly time-consuming and labor-intensive task that is best left to professionals with the proper equipment. Stump grinding is a fast, convenient and relatively inexpensive way to get rid of unwanted stumps. This process involves using a machine that looks like a large lawnmower with a blade attached to it that grinds the stump into wood chips. A professional can usually grind a stump in a few hours or less depending on its size and location.

Before the grinding begins, the worker checks to make sure that the stump grinder can work in the area without damaging any existing plants or property. They then clear the work area of tools, toys, twigs and rocks so that they can operate safely. Workers wear safety gear including goggles, gloves and chainsaw safety pants and always follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions for the stump grinder.

Once the grinding process begins, it takes only a few minutes to reduce a small stump to below ground level. Larger stumps and those with extensive roots will take longer. Stump grinding leaves behind a pile of wood chips which can be used as mulch or added to the compost. The hole in the ground can also be filled with dirt or planted with new grass seed.

Unless you are planting a new tree in the same spot as the old one, it is recommended that you allow the chipped wood to decay naturally. Adding wood chip mulch to your garden or flowerbeds helps reduce weeds and provides nutrients for the plants you are growing.

You can plant a tree in the same spot as a stump that has been ground out, but it will be more difficult for the new tree to thrive. This is because the old roots still take up space, change the soil’s acidity (which can be reversed by adding organic material) and secrete a toxin (juglone) that prevents other plants from taking root nearby.

If you are going to plant a tree in the same location as an existing stump, it is important that the soil be tested first. This will help you determine if the ground is suitable for new growth, and if it is, how much amendments will be needed to ensure a good start.

Attempting to do this work yourself is not advised because of the potential for injury from sharp tools, breathing in wood dust and hitting underground pipes or sprinkler lines. Professionals are experienced in stump grinding and can remove a stump without harming the surrounding plant life or structures. They can also handle any necessary permit paperwork on your behalf.
