Stump Removal – How to Properly Remove a Stump

Stump removal can be very labor intensive. It requires the use of hand tools, power equipment and a great deal of time to complete the task. Depending on the size of the stump and the roots, some of these tasks can be dangerous and may require the use of special safety gear like a harness, respirator and eye protection. The risk factor is also influenced by the location of the stump within your yard, whether it is in close proximity to water or electric lines or other potential hazards.

For those who do not want to deal with the labor and expense of removing a tree stump by hand or hiring a professional stump grinder, there are several chemical methods that can be used to eliminate the remains. These products typically contain potassium nitrate and work by speeding up wood decay. They are poured into holes drilled into the stump and then covered with dirt. These chemicals can be harmful to children and pets, so it is important to keep them away from the stump and surrounding areas. It will take a few months for the chemicals to be fully absorbed into the stump and begin to work.

Before using any chemical methods, you should first dig around the stump with a shovel or mattock to expose the roots. You can then trim the lateral roots with shears or a chainsaw to make them easier to remove. If the stump taproot is particularly large and is still attached to the ground, it can be split in a similar manner to a log of firewood with an axe or maul.

The next step is to fill the hole with a combination of loam and sawdust. Keeping the area moist will also help in the removal process. You can also add an organic mulch such as hay or bark to retain moisture and provide additional nutrients for the stump and surrounding soil. If you do decide to use a chemical method, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and wear appropriate safety equipment. It is a good idea to place a plastic tarp over the stump and surrounding area to prevent any damage from rain or wind.

Some people even resort to pouring kerosene on the stump and lighting it on fire. This method can be quite effective, although it is very dangerous and should only be performed with proper safety precautions and the proper equipment. You should wear a mask and respirator as well as steel-toed boots and work gloves. It is a good idea to consult your local fire department about open flame burning as some communities have regulations in place for this type of activity. You should also avoid this method if you have young children or pets in your home. The heat created by this process can be fatal to them. It can also be very hazardous to any nearby plants. For these reasons, we highly discourage the use of this method for stump removal.
