Tree Trimming and Shaping

Tree trimming and shaping are common landscape maintenance activities that are important for maintaining the health of your trees. They are used to remove dead or damaged branches, promote proper plant growth and maintain a clean appearance. They can also prevent the onset of disease, insects and other pests in your trees or shrubs. These activities are done with the help of different tools and equipment depending on the size of the job. A power tool like a trimmer is typically used for trimming purposes. It is a long, flexible pole with a motor and a blade on each end that can be operated by one or two hands. Lopping shears are used for thick branches while smaller shears that can be operated by one hand are used to cut buds and leaves.

The primary reason for trimming trees and shrubs is to improve the aesthetic look of your yard. When trees are overgrown, they can become misshapen and unbalanced. In addition, they may deprive other plants in the surrounding area of sunlight, moisture and nutrients.

Proper trimming and pruning of a tree will also increase its health. By removing diseased, insect-infested, or broken branches, it will help reduce the spread of these problems. Additionally, it will help promote healthy branch growth and reduce the risk of damage to property, vehicles, or pedestrians.

The frequency of tree trimming and pruning will vary depending on the type of tree and its environment. In general, deciduous trees require more frequent trimming than evergreens. Also, some trees may require more frequent trimming than others because of their rapid growth rate. It is advisable to consult with a professional landscaper about the specific needs of your trees and shrubs.

A well-established tree can usually withstand a light trim without adversely affecting its health. However, a heavy trim can significantly impact the health of a young or damaged tree. It is also advisable to keep in mind that every cut made on a tree has a long-term effect.

Branches that grow in the wrong direction can push against electrical utility wires or structures, as well as block views of your home. A professional will know how much of each branch can be safely removed without causing structural damage or reducing the overall height and shape of your trees.

Crown thinning involves reducing the density of a tree’s crown by removing specific branches to allow more air and sunlight penetration. It can also help alleviate stress on specific limbs caused by wind, snow, gravity or ice.

When a branch is to be removed, make the first cut just above the branch collar, where the stem tissue and bark meet. You can identify this area by a slight swelling or rougher texture. Then, move an inch or so away from the collar and make another cut down to where the branch separates from the trunk of the tree. This will avoid leaving a stub that can invite fungus and other problems.
